About the recording
In Ghost Museum, 1983 becomes 2017. A stolen Hall and Oates keyboard sound here a borrowed Earth, Wind and Fire drum beat there: ghosts of a past decade mingle with lyrics about what it’s like to be a 15-year-old in an old man’s body and why it’s impossible to stop writing music.
“Do you want to visit my Ghost Museum?” my son asked. “Ghost Museum” is really a tribute album to my sons, my father(well, what it’s like to be one) and the 80s. The title came from a make shift display of Halloween costumes my son constructed in his playroom when he was 10-years-old. But, the title also really applied to how I felt walking through my dad’s house after he died that same year. The songs are representative of what I was listening to back in the early 80s. But, now I’m telling stories to my kids growing up in 2017. I’m explaining what it was like to fall in love, have sex, get your heart broken, have big plans, have no plans, wonder what the hell you’re doing most of the time and then look back on it all wondering how your body got so old even though you still feel like a confused 15-year-old kid some of the time. I tried to make the new songs sound like if the 80s were still the main mode of pop music today.
The musicians on the new album are a hodge podge of players from around the Indianapolis rock and jazz scenes. A lot of them have played in other bands with me and with each other: ESW, Jonny Socko, Mina Keohane and the Wondrous Flying Machine… the music scene in Indianapolis, like some other cities, is sort of a friendly family musical experiment.
Working with old friends and enemies again. Yuri Duncan did the original business card for my high school band, the Lucky Eddys, and he also did the fantastic new CD and cover art. The final mix was done by Eric Klee Johnson who used to be in an Indianapolis Band named “Exquisite Fashion”. The Lucky Eddys hated Exquisite Fashion. Recently, I told Eric this and he responded, “Yeah, everybody hated us.” (For the record: I don’t hate Eric Klee Johnson.)
